Prayer Times Van Nuys, CA Today

How Prayer Times in Van Nuys Change Through the Year

No two days in Van Nuys start at quite the same time. Across 2026, the earliest dawn prayer falls on 10 Jun 2026 at 4:17 AM, while the latest falls on 08 Mar 2026 at 6:05 AM. Between those dates Fajr travels 1 hour 48 minutes, which is why this page recalculates the timetable daily instead of printing a fixed one. The swing is gentler than in the northern states because Van Nuys sits at 34.2 degrees north, where daylight stays steadier through the year.

Sunset moves even further. Maghrib in Van Nuys is earliest on 28 Nov 2026 at 4:44 PM and latest on 27 Jun 2026 at 8:10 PM, a shift of 3 hours 26 minutes. On the longest day of the year, 21 Jun 2026, the sun sets at 8:09 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it sets at 4:48 PM.

Anyone who keeps the voluntary fasts, on Mondays and Thursdays or the white days of each month, feels the range most. The longest fast of 2026 in Van Nuys runs 15 hours 51 minutes, on 17 Jun 2026, from a Fajr of 4:17 AM to a Maghrib of 8:08 PM; the shortest is just 11 hours 7 minutes on 17 Dec 2026. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, that longest fast ranks 136 of 218. Solar noon drifts as well: Dhuhr moves between 11:37 AM and 1:04 PM across the year, following the equation of time.

How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in Van Nuys

Why do the times on this page move a little every day? Because each of the five prayers begins at a set position of the sun. PrayerTimesUSA works out the Van Nuys schedule with the ISNA method used across most of North America: Fajr and Isha at 15 degrees of sun depression, Asr by the standard shadow rule, with the Hanafi Asr in the method selector above. The Hijri date today in Van Nuys is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 (03 Nov 2026).

Fajr (5:05 AM today)

Fajr is prayed at dawn, when light first appears across the horizon before sunrise. Today in Van Nuys it begins at 5:05 AM and must be finished by sunrise (6:15 AM). Across the year, Van Nuys's dawn moves from 4:17 AM at the earliest to 6:05 AM at the latest, so regular worshippers reset their Fajr alarm every few weeks.

Dhuhr (11:37 AM today)

The noon prayer begins once the sun has passed its peak. In Van Nuys that works out to 11:37 AM today. Clock time and sun time differ here because Van Nuys keeps America/Los_Angeles time from a position away from the zone's central meridian. On Fridays the congregational Jummah replaces Dhuhr.

Asr (2:37 PM today)

The standard Asr rule (followed by the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) starts Asr when a shadow grows as long as the object itself, past the noon shadow: 2:37 PM in Van Nuys today. The Hanafi school uses twice the length, putting Asr roughly 45 to 65 minutes later; switch the method at the top of the page to see it. Pray Asr before the sunlight yellows late in the day.

Maghrib (4:59 PM today)

Maghrib's window opens at sunset, the instant the sun's disc drops fully out of sight: 4:59 PM today in Van Nuys. For someone fasting, this is iftar, and the Sunnah is to break the fast at once, with dates or water, before praying.

Isha (6:09 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night

Isha starts when the red afterglow fades from the western sky: 6:09 PM tonight in Van Nuys. The middle of the Islamic night falls halfway between Maghrib and tomorrow's Fajr, and the last third of the night after that midpoint is the Tahajjud time. Find tonight's exact last third with our Tahajjud calculator.

Daylight Saving Time in California: The Two Jump Days

Van Nuys moves its clocks twice a year, and the prayer timetable jumps with them. Daylight saving begins on 08 Mar 2026: Fajr leaps from 5:06 AM to 6:05 AM in one night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib follows, from 5:55 PM to 6:56 PM. On 01 Nov 2026 the clocks fall back, and Fajr returns from 6:03 AM to 5:03 AM. Mosques in Van Nuys reset their iqamah boards on the same weekends. This page always follows the America/Los_Angeles time in force, so the times you see are already adjusted.
