How the Iftar and Suhoor Times Are Calculated
Iftar begins at Maghrib (sunset), when the fast is opened, and suhoor ends at Fajr (true dawn), when the fast begins. Times are computed astronomically for each city's coordinates using the ISNA method (Fajr and Isha at 15 degrees), the same methodology behind our daily prayer times. Stop eating a few minutes before the listed suhoor time as a precaution, and break your fast as soon as iftar arrives. If your local mosque announces slightly different times, follow your mosque.

How Fasting Hours Vary Across the United States
Ramadan 2027 falls in late winter, so American fasts are moderate compared with a summer Ramadan, but they still vary a lot by latitude and by week. No city shows this better than Anchorage, AK, which holds both extremes of our 218-location calendar: the shortest fast, 10 hrs 30 mins on February 8, 2027, and the longest, 13 hrs 4 mins on March 8, 2027. Its days lengthen so quickly in February and March that the fast grows by more than two and a half hours within the month. Northern cities see their fasting hours grow fastest during the month, because their days lengthen quickly in February and March, while southern cities and Hawaii change only a few minutes across all 29 days. Every city page shows its own daily fast length in the timetable, so you can watch your fast grow day by day.
Preparing for Ramadan 2027
Ramadan 2027 begins in the second week of February, in the middle of the American winter. A little preparation in late January makes the first week easier. Shift your sleep schedule gradually toward the suhoor wake-up time shown on your city page, so the first morning does not come as a shock. Stock the kitchen for suhoor with slow-release foods (oats, eggs, yogurt, dates, water) and plan simple iftar meals for workdays. Check your local mosque's announcements in late January for its taraweeh schedule and any community iftar nights, and tell your employer or school about the fasting dates early if you need schedule adjustments for the month. Parents often use the short winter fasts of 2027, around 11 to 13 hours in most of the country, to let older children practice fasting for part of the day.
Will Ramadan 2027 Have 29 or 30 Days?
By astronomical calculation, Ramadan 1448 has 29 days: February 8 to March 8, 2027. Islamic months, though, are confirmed by sighting the crescent moon. On the evening of March 8, the 29th day, observers look for the Shawwal crescent. If it is sighted, Eid al-Fitr falls on March 9. If it is not sighted, Ramadan completes 30 days, the last fast falls on March 9, and Eid al-Fitr moves to March 10. The same fork applied at the start of the month, which is why every date on this page is labelled expected until the sighting is announced.
