How Prayer Times in Sunnyvale Change Through the Year

Prayer times in Sunnyvale are set by the sun, so they move every single day. The biggest daily swing is at dawn. The earliest Fajr of 2026 in Sunnyvale falls on 11 Jun 2026 at 4:16 AM, while the latest Fajr arrives on 31 Oct 2026 at 6:19 AM. That is a difference of 2 hours 3 minutes across the year, which is why a timetable printed in January cannot be reused in June. The swing is gentler than in the northern states because Sunnyvale sits at 37.4 degrees north, where daylight stays steadier through the year.

The evening moves even more than the morning. The earliest Maghrib of the year in Sunnyvale is 4:50 PM on 01 Dec 2026; the latest is 8:33 PM on 23 Jun 2026, a shift of 3 hours 43 minutes. On the longest day, 21 Jun 2026, sunset holds until 8:32 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it comes at 4:54 PM.

For anyone fasting outside Ramadan, such as the Monday and Thursday fasts or the white days each month, the longest fast of 2026 in Sunnyvale runs 16 hours 16 minutes on 18 Jun 2026, from Fajr at 4:16 AM to Maghrib at 8:32 PM. The shortest fast is 10 hours 53 minutes on 17 Dec 2026. Solar noon moves too: Dhuhr ranges from 11:52 AM in one part of the year to 1:19 PM in another, following the equation of time. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, that longest fast ranks 101 of 218.

How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in Sunnyvale

Why do the times on this page move a little every day? Because each of the five prayers begins at a set position of the sun. PrayerTimesUSA works out the Sunnyvale schedule with the ISNA method used across most of North America: Fajr and Isha at 15 degrees of sun depression, Asr by the standard shadow rule, with the Hanafi Asr in the method selector above. The Hijri date today in Sunnyvale is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 (03 Nov 2026).

Fajr (5:22 AM today)

Fajr is the dawn prayer, and its time begins at true dawn, the first horizontal light in the east. Today in Sunnyvale that is 5:22 AM. Pray it before sunrise (6:35 AM); after sunrise it counts as qada (missed). Through the year in Sunnyvale, dawn moves between 4:16 AM and 6:19 AM, so the Fajr alarm needs resetting with the seasons.

Dhuhr (11:52 AM today)

Dhuhr enters just after solar noon, the moment the sun stops climbing and starts down. Solar noon in Sunnyvale is not 12:00 on the clock, because the city sits inside the America/Los_Angeles zone rather than on its meridian line: today it gives a Dhuhr of 11:52 AM. On Fridays, Jummah takes Dhuhr's place.

Asr (2:46 PM today)

The standard Asr rule (followed by the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) starts Asr when a shadow grows as long as the object itself, past the noon shadow: 2:46 PM in Sunnyvale today. The Hanafi school uses twice the length, putting Asr roughly 45 to 65 minutes later; switch the method at the top of the page to see it. Pray Asr before the sunlight yellows late in the day.

Maghrib (5:08 PM today)

Maghrib's window opens at sunset, the instant the sun's disc drops fully out of sight: 5:08 PM today in Sunnyvale. For someone fasting, this is iftar, and the Sunnah is to break the fast at once, with dates or water, before praying.

Isha (6:21 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night

When the red twilight has gone from the west, Isha begins: 6:21 PM tonight in Sunnyvale. The night that follows is measured from Maghrib to Fajr; its last third, after Islamic midnight, is the Tahajjud time. Use the Tahajjud calculator to find tonight's last third in Sunnyvale.

Finding the Qibla Direction in Sunnyvale (19.31° North)

Prayer is valid only when faced toward the Kaaba in Mecca, and from Sunnyvale the shortest path over the Earth's surface, the great-circle route, points 19.31° north from true north. The bearing is calculated from Sunnyvale's coordinates (37.4° N, 122.0° W) to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). At about 8206 miles (13207 km), it is one of the longer qibla distances in the United States. From Sunnyvale, the great-circle line heads across Canada and the North Atlantic before descending toward Arabia.

At home or at work in Sunnyvale, the Qibla Compass on your phone reads the bearing directly. Calibrate it with a slow figure-eight motion, and keep it clear of metal furniture and electronics that drag the needle. Inside a mosque, the mihrab already marks the direction.

Daylight Saving Time in California: The Two Jump Days

Sunnyvale moves its clocks twice a year, and the prayer timetable jumps with them. Daylight saving begins on 08 Mar 2026: Fajr leaps from 5:19 AM to 6:18 AM in one night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib follows, from 6:08 PM to 7:09 PM. On 01 Nov 2026 the clocks fall back, and Fajr returns from 6:19 AM to 5:20 AM. Mosques in Sunnyvale reset their iqamah boards on the same weekends. This page always follows the America/Los_Angeles time in force, so the times you see are already adjusted.
