How Prayer Times in Reno Change Through the Year

Prayer times in Reno are set by the sun, so they move every single day. The biggest daily swing is at dawn. The earliest Fajr of 2026 in Reno falls on 13 Jun 2026 at 3:55 AM, while the latest Fajr arrives on 31 Oct 2026 at 6:11 AM. That is a difference of 2 hours 16 minutes across the year, which is why a timetable printed in January cannot be reused in June. The swing is wide because Reno sits at 39.5 degrees north, far enough from the equator for the seasons to move the sun's path a long way.

Sunset moves even further. Maghrib in Reno is earliest on 03 Dec 2026 at 4:35 PM and latest on 24 Jun 2026 at 8:31 PM, a shift of 3 hours 56 minutes. On the longest day of the year, 21 Jun 2026, the sun sets at 8:30 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it sets at 4:39 PM.

For anyone fasting outside Ramadan, such as the Monday and Thursday fasts or the white days each month, the longest fast of 2026 in Reno runs 16 hours 35 minutes on 19 Jun 2026, from Fajr at 3:55 AM to Maghrib at 8:30 PM. The shortest fast is 10 hours 43 minutes on 18 Dec 2026. Solar noon moves too: Dhuhr ranges from 11:43 AM in one part of the year to 1:10 PM in another, following the equation of time. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, that longest fast ranks 80 of 218.

Muslim Community in Reno, Nevada

Reno's Muslim community began with a handful of members in the 1960s, organised by Dr Ahmed Essa, a University of Nevada, Reno English professor from 1967 to 1991, who founded the Northern Nevada Muslim Society. Early worshippers prayed in spare rooms in churches, backyards and apartments, struggling to find space for Jumuah and religious events.

The community found its first permanent home in 1992, when Imtiaz Ahmad, president from 1991 to 1993, founded the first mosque in Reno's history on Valley Road. That opening brought the first Sunday school and steady Ramadan observance, and the Northern Nevada Muslim Community Center, established in 1999, now gathers at its Oddie Boulevard center in Sparks.

The community also built civic roots. It partnered with Mountain View Cemetery in west Reno in 2011 for a Muslim burial section, and its leaders have helped refugee families settling in northern Nevada, including Syrians and families from Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan. Weekend Islamic studies, interfaith columns in the local paper and a planned school beside the mosque show a community that grew from a few families into several thousand.

How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in Reno

The Reno timetable on this page is calculated with the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) method, the convention followed by most mosques in the United States. It sets Fajr and Isha by a 15-degree depression angle of the sun, and Asr by the standard shadow rule; the Hanafi Asr is one tap away in the method selector. Each prayer is tied to a position of the sun, never to a fixed clock time. Today, 03 Nov 2026, is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448.

Fajr (5:14 AM today)

Fajr is prayed at dawn, when light first appears across the horizon before sunrise. Today in Reno it begins at 5:14 AM and must be finished by sunrise (6:30 AM). Across the year, Reno's dawn moves from 3:55 AM at the earliest to 6:11 AM at the latest, so regular worshippers reset their Fajr alarm every few weeks.

Dhuhr (11:43 AM today)

Dhuhr starts once the sun has crossed its peak and begun to decline. Solar noon is not the same as 12:00 on the clock, because Reno sits within the America/Los_Angeles zone, away from its central meridian: today Dhuhr in Reno is 11:43 AM. On Fridays the Jummah congregation takes the place of Dhuhr.

Asr (2:33 PM today)

Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its height beyond the noon shadow. That standard rule (Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali) gives 2:33 PM in Reno today. The Hanafi rule waits until the shadow is twice the height, which falls roughly 45 to 65 minutes later; use the calculation method selector at the top of this page to view Hanafi Asr. Finish Asr before the sun turns yellow and weak near the horizon.

Maghrib (4:55 PM today)

Maghrib enters the moment the whole disc of the sun disappears below the horizon: 4:55 PM today in Reno. It is also the iftar moment on fasting days, and the Sunnah is to break the fast promptly with dates or water, then pray.

Isha (6:11 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night

Isha begins when the red twilight leaves the western sky, at 6:11 PM tonight in Reno. Islamic midnight is the midpoint between Maghrib and the next Fajr, and the last third of the night after it is the time of Tahajjud, the voluntary night prayer. Use our Tahajjud calculator to find tonight's last third for Reno.

Finding the Qibla Direction in Reno (21.15° North)

Muslims pray facing the Kaaba in Mecca, and from Reno that means facing 21.15° north from true north, measured the short way around the globe. The bearing comes from Reno's position (39.5° N, 119.8° W) set against the Kaaba's (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). At about 8025 miles (12915 km), it is one of the longer qibla distances in the United States. From Reno, the great-circle line heads across Canada and the North Atlantic before descending toward Arabia.

At home or at work in Reno, the Qibla Compass on your phone reads the bearing directly. Calibrate it with a slow figure-eight motion, and keep it clear of metal furniture and electronics that drag the needle. Inside a mosque, the mihrab already marks the direction.

Daylight Saving Time in Nevada: The Two Jump Days

Reno moves its clocks twice a year, and the prayer timetable jumps with them. Daylight saving begins on 08 Mar 2026: Fajr leaps from 5:09 AM to 6:08 AM in one night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib follows, from 5:58 PM to 6:59 PM. On 01 Nov 2026 the clocks fall back, and Fajr returns from 6:11 AM to 5:12 AM. Mosques in Reno reset their iqamah boards on the same weekends. This page always follows the America/Los_Angeles time in force, so the times you see are already adjusted.
