Prayer Times Madison: Islamic Prayer Schedule & Community Guide
Looking for prayer times Madison? Today is 03 Nov 2026 (23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 Hijri) in Madison, Wisconsin. Fajr begins at 5:15 AM and the fast-breaking Maghrib prayer is at 4:47 PM. 2 Islamic centers serve the local Muslim community. The complete timetable below covers all five daily prayers plus the 31-day monthly schedule.
How Prayer Times in Madison Change Through the Year
No two days in Madison start at quite the same time. Across 2026, the earliest dawn prayer falls on 12 Jun 2026 at 3:30 AM, while the latest falls on 31 Oct 2026 at 6:11 AM. Between those dates Fajr travels 2 hours 41 minutes, which is why this page recalculates the timetable daily instead of printing a fixed one. The swing is wide because Madison sits at 43.1 degrees north, far enough from the equator for the seasons to move the sun's path a long way.
The evening moves even more than the morning. The earliest Maghrib of the year in Madison is 4:22 PM on 08 Dec 2026; the latest is 8:41 PM on 21 Jun 2026, a shift of 4 hours 19 minutes. On the longest day, 21 Jun 2026, sunset holds until 8:41 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it comes at 4:26 PM.
For anyone fasting outside Ramadan, such as the Monday and Thursday fasts or the white days each month, the longest fast of 2026 in Madison runs 17 hours 11 minutes on 21 Jun 2026, from Fajr at 3:30 AM to Maghrib at 8:41 PM. The shortest fast is 10 hours 26 minutes on 17 Dec 2026. Solar noon moves too: Dhuhr ranges from 11:41 AM in one part of the year to 1:08 PM in another, following the equation of time. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, only 19 have a longer longest fast, which puts Madison in the longest-fast quarter of the country.
Muslim Community in Madison, Wisconsin
Madison's Muslim community grew up around the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The first wave of Middle Eastern students arrived in the late 1970s, many living in the Eagle Heights neighbourhood, and by the late 1990s doctors, families and other professionals were settling in the city for work. A 2001 report put Dane County's Muslim population at 2,500 to 3,000, and the community has since grown far more diverse, drawing Malaysians, Pakistanis, Nigerians, Sudanese and American converts.
The Islamic Center of Madison, at 21 N Orchard Street in the heart of campus, is the city's first Islamic center and still its downtown anchor. It began as a place for students to pray, and today it runs Quran and Arabic classes, study circles, Saturday community iftars and a weekly Islamic school, with students regularly leading prayers and talks.
Two other mosques complete the city map. The Islamic Center of East Madison at 4002 Lien Road serves the east side, while the Madinah Community Center, established in November 1994, moved the following September to Masjid Us-Sunnah at 4718 Hammersley Road on the southwest side. Madinah Academy, a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school, and holiday celebrations at the Alliant Energy Center show how settled the community now is.
How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in Madison
Prayer times follow the sun, so they shift a little every day. For Madison, this page uses the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) method, the one most US mosques follow: a 15-degree sun angle for Fajr and Isha, the standard shadow rule for Asr, and the Hanafi Asr available in the method selector. Today, 03 Nov 2026, is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 on the Hijri calendar.
Fajr (5:15 AM today)
True dawn, the first white light spreading sideways along the eastern horizon, opens the Fajr window. In Madison today that moment is 5:15 AM. The window shuts at sunrise (6:35 AM); a Fajr prayed after that is qada, a missed prayer made up later. Because dawn in Madison swings between 3:30 AM and 6:11 AM over the year, a fixed alarm time never works for long.
Dhuhr (11:41 AM today)
Dhuhr starts once the sun has crossed its peak and begun to decline. Solar noon is not the same as 12:00 on the clock, because Madison sits within the America/Chicago zone, away from its central meridian: today Dhuhr in Madison is 11:41 AM. On Fridays the Jummah congregation takes the place of Dhuhr.
Asr (2:24 PM today)
Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its height beyond the noon shadow. That standard rule (Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali) gives 2:24 PM in Madison today. The Hanafi rule waits until the shadow is twice the height, which falls roughly 45 to 65 minutes later; use the calculation method selector at the top of this page to view Hanafi Asr. Finish Asr before the sun turns yellow and weak near the horizon.
Maghrib (4:47 PM today)
Maghrib's window opens at sunset, the instant the sun's disc drops fully out of sight: 4:47 PM today in Madison. For someone fasting, this is iftar, and the Sunnah is to break the fast at once, with dates or water, before praying.
Isha (6:07 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night
Isha starts when the red afterglow fades from the western sky: 6:07 PM tonight in Madison. The middle of the Islamic night falls halfway between Maghrib and tomorrow's Fajr, and the last third of the night after that midpoint is the Tahajjud time. Find tonight's exact last third with our Tahajjud calculator.
Friday Jummah and Mosques in Madison, Wisconsin
Jummah, the Friday congregational prayer, replaces Dhuhr every week and is the largest regular gathering of Muslims in Madison. 2 mosques and Islamic centers in Madison are listed below with their addresses, including Islamic Center of Madison (ICM). Each mosque sets its own khutbah time inside the Dhuhr window (Dhuhr today is 11:41 AM), so check the mosque's own notice board or website before you go, and arrive early: Friday parking fills fast.
Most mosques in Madison also hold the five daily prayers in congregation, Quran classes for children, and taraweeh through Ramadan. If your mosque in Madison is missing from the list, contact us and we will add it with its address and Jummah time.
Finding the Qibla Direction in Madison (47.15° North-East)
Prayer is valid only when faced toward the Kaaba in Mecca, and from Madison the shortest path over the Earth's surface, the great-circle route, points 47.15° north-east from true north. The bearing is calculated from Madison's coordinates (43.1° N, 89.4° W) to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). Along that bearing, the Kaaba is about 6938 miles (11165 km) from Madison in a straight line over the Earth's curved surface. It surprises many people that the direction is north-east rather than south-east: from North America, the shortest line to Mecca crosses the North Atlantic, not the Pacific.
To face the qibla at home or at work in Madison, open the Qibla Compass on your phone, calibrate it with a slow figure-eight motion, and keep it away from metal furniture and electrical equipment that pull the needle. In a mosque, the mihrab already marks the direction.
Daylight Saving Time in Wisconsin: The Two Jump Days
Twice a year in Madison, the clock moves and every prayer time jumps with it. When daylight saving time begins on 08 Mar 2026, Fajr moves from 5:06 AM to 6:04 AM in a single night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib moves from 5:54 PM to 6:56 PM. When standard time returns on 01 Nov 2026, Fajr moves from 6:11 AM back to 5:13 AM, and sunset prayers come an hour earlier in the evening. Every time on this page already follows the America/Chicago clock in force on that date, so no manual adjustment is ever needed.
