Prayer Times Durham: Islamic Prayer Schedule & Community Guide
Looking for prayer times Durham? Today is 03 Nov 2026 (23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 Hijri) in Durham, North Carolina. Fajr begins at 5:28 AM and the fast-breaking Maghrib prayer is at 5:18 PM. 3 Islamic centers serve the local Muslim community. The complete timetable below covers all five daily prayers plus the 31-day monthly schedule.
How Prayer Times in Durham Change Through the Year
No two days in Durham start at quite the same time. Across 2026, the earliest dawn prayer falls on 14 Jun 2026 at 4:30 AM, while the latest falls on 08 Mar 2026 at 6:26 AM. Between those dates Fajr travels 1 hour 56 minutes, which is why this page recalculates the timetable daily instead of printing a fixed one. The swing is gentler than in the northern states because Durham sits at 36.0 degrees north, where daylight stays steadier through the year.
The evening moves even more than the morning. The earliest Maghrib of the year in Durham is 5:01 PM on 01 Dec 2026; the latest is 8:36 PM on 21 Jun 2026, a shift of 3 hours 35 minutes. On the longest day, 21 Jun 2026, sunset holds until 8:36 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it comes at 5:05 PM.
Anyone who keeps the voluntary fasts, on Mondays and Thursdays or the white days of each month, feels the range most. The longest fast of 2026 in Durham runs 16 hours 5 minutes, on 21 Jun 2026, from a Fajr of 4:31 AM to a Maghrib of 8:36 PM; the shortest is just 10 hours 59 minutes on 17 Dec 2026. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, that longest fast ranks 115 of 218. Solar noon drifts as well: Dhuhr moves between 11:59 AM and 1:26 PM across the year, following the equation of time.
Muslim Community in Durham, North Carolina
Durham holds North Carolina's first mosque. The Ar-Razzaq Islamic Center in the West End was established in 1956 as Muhammad's Mosque No. 34, under the Nation of Islam, and grew out of Durham's African American Muslim community. In the 1970s, following the community's move to mainstream Al-Islam, it was renamed Ar-Razzaq, and its current location at 1009 West Chapel Hill Street opened in 1972.
Ar-Razzaq's influence reached across the state. Its leaders established the first Muslim school and mosque in Raleigh in 1971 and directly supported mosques in Fayetteville, Greenville and Kinston, while Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali visited during the 1960s. In Durham itself the community once ran a bakery, a fish market, a restaurant and other West End businesses, and today the center still runs a weekend school, a summer feeding program and meals for seniors.
Today Durham's Muslim life is much wider. Jamaat Ibad Ar-Rahman, chartered in 1981, opened its first masjid on Roxboro Street in 1983 and a new building in 1989, and its school, opened in 1990, is the longest operating Muslim school in North Carolina. The community now gathers at 3034 Fayetteville Street and at its Parkwood facility at 5122 Revere Road, with a funeral home established in 2011.
How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in Durham
The Durham timetable on this page is calculated with the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) method, the convention followed by most mosques in the United States. It sets Fajr and Isha by a 15-degree depression angle of the sun, and Asr by the standard shadow rule; the Hanafi Asr is one tap away in the method selector. Each prayer is tied to a position of the sun, never to a fixed clock time. Today, 03 Nov 2026, is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448.
Fajr (5:28 AM today)
Fajr is the dawn prayer, and its time begins at true dawn, the first horizontal light in the east. Today in Durham that is 5:28 AM. Pray it before sunrise (6:40 AM); after sunrise it counts as qada (missed). Through the year in Durham, dawn moves between 4:30 AM and 6:26 AM, so the Fajr alarm needs resetting with the seasons.
Dhuhr (11:59 AM today)
Dhuhr begins just after the sun passes its highest point and starts to descend. Clock noon and solar noon rarely match, because Durham sits inside the America/New_York zone rather than on its meridian, so Dhuhr today is 11:59 AM. On Fridays, Jummah replaces Dhuhr.
Asr (2:56 PM today)
Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its height beyond the noon shadow. That standard rule (Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali) gives 2:56 PM in Durham today. The Hanafi rule waits until the shadow is twice the height, which falls roughly 45 to 65 minutes later; use the calculation method selector at the top of this page to view Hanafi Asr. Finish Asr before the sun turns yellow and weak near the horizon.
Maghrib (5:18 PM today)
Maghrib enters the moment the whole disc of the sun disappears below the horizon: 5:18 PM today in Durham. It is also the iftar moment on fasting days, and the Sunnah is to break the fast promptly with dates or water, then pray.
Isha (6:30 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night
Isha begins when the red twilight leaves the western sky, at 6:30 PM tonight in Durham. Islamic midnight is the midpoint between Maghrib and the next Fajr, and the last third of the night after it is the time of Tahajjud, the voluntary night prayer. Use our Tahajjud calculator to find tonight's last third for Durham.

Finding the Qibla Direction in Durham (55.62° North-East)
Muslims pray facing the Kaaba in Mecca, and from Durham that means facing 55.62° north-east from true north, measured the short way around the globe. The bearing comes from Durham's position (36.0° N, 78.9° W) set against the Kaaba's (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). Along that bearing, the Kaaba is about 6804 miles (10950 km) from Durham in a straight line over the Earth's curved surface. It surprises many people that the direction is north-east rather than south-east: from North America, the shortest line to Mecca crosses the North Atlantic, not the Pacific.
To face the qibla at home or at work in Durham, open the Qibla Compass on your phone, calibrate it with a slow figure-eight motion, and keep it away from metal furniture and electrical equipment that pull the needle. In a mosque, the mihrab already marks the direction.
Daylight Saving Time in North Carolina: The Two Jump Days
Twice a year in Durham, the clock moves and every prayer time jumps with it. When daylight saving time begins on 08 Mar 2026, Fajr moves from 5:27 AM to 6:26 AM in a single night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib moves from 6:16 PM to 7:17 PM. When standard time returns on 01 Nov 2026, Fajr moves from 6:26 AM back to 5:26 AM, and sunset prayers come an hour earlier in the evening. Every time on this page already follows the America/New_York clock in force on that date, so no manual adjustment is ever needed.
