Prayer Times New Orleans: Islamic Prayer Schedule & Community Guide

Prayer times New Orleans - Islamic prayer schedule and mosque guide

Prayer times New Orleans for today, 03 Nov 2026 (23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 Hijri): Fajr begins at 5:09 AM in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Maghrib, the fast-breaking prayer, is at 5:12 PM. 2 Islamic centers serve the local Muslim community. Below is the complete timetable for all five daily prayers plus the 31-day monthly schedule.

How Prayer Times in New Orleans Change Through the Year

Prayer times in New Orleans are set by the sun, so they move every single day. The biggest daily swing is at dawn. The earliest Fajr of 2026 in New Orleans falls on 07 Jun 2026 at 4:41 AM, while the latest Fajr arrives on 08 Mar 2026 at 6:13 AM. That is a difference of 1 hour 32 minutes across the year, which is why a timetable printed in January cannot be reused in June. The swing is gentler than in the northern states because New Orleans sits at 30.0 degrees north, where daylight stays steadier through the year.

Sunset moves even further. Maghrib in New Orleans is earliest on 27 Nov 2026 at 5:00 PM and latest on 22 Jun 2026 at 8:05 PM, a shift of 3 hours 5 minutes. On the longest day of the year, 21 Jun 2026, the sun sets at 8:04 PM; on the shortest day, 21 Dec 2026, it sets at 5:05 PM.

For anyone fasting outside Ramadan, such as the Monday and Thursday fasts or the white days each month, the longest fast of 2026 in New Orleans runs 15 hours 23 minutes on 18 Jun 2026, from Fajr at 4:41 AM to Maghrib at 8:04 PM. The shortest fast is 11 hours 24 minutes on 15 Dec 2026. Solar noon moves too: Dhuhr ranges from 11:44 AM in one part of the year to 1:11 PM in another, following the equation of time. Measured against the other 218 cities and neighbourhoods we track, that longest fast sits near the gentle end of the table, ranked 200 of 218.

📊 The 2026 year in New Orleans, in numbers: Longest fast 15 hours 23 minutes (18 Jun 2026) · Shortest fast 11 hours 24 minutes (15 Dec 2026) · Fajr ranges from 4:41 AM (07 Jun 2026) to 6:13 AM (08 Mar 2026) · Maghrib ranges from 5:00 PM (27 Nov 2026) to 8:05 PM (22 Jun 2026). Muslim Community in New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans has one of the oldest Muslim communities in the Deep South. Masjid Al-Islam was founded in the early 1960s in a working-class part of the city, and in 1968 the community bought the Magnolia Street building that still houses the mosque, later adding the Sister Clara Muhammad School across the street.

The community's immigrant story centers on Masjid Abu-Bakr Al-Siddiq in Metairie, founded in 1988 by residents including Abdul Sattar Al-Dahir and Mohammed Suleman. The congregation began as a Jumu'ah prayer group meeting in an apartment building and then in a doctor's clinic, before raising funds for a purpose-built mosque with a geodesic dome and a single minaret, described as the largest mosque in Louisiana, serving about 300 families from many countries.

Hurricane Katrina tested the community badly: Masjid Al-Islam took on about five feet of water, its roof was damaged and much of its congregation was displaced. The mosques rebuilt and carry on, and the Jefferson Muslim Association had already broken ground in May 2004 on land in Kenner for a new mosque at Williams Boulevard and 21st Street.

How Each Prayer Time Is Calculated in New Orleans

Each prayer begins at a defined position of the sun, not at a fixed clock time. PrayerTimesUSA calculates the New Orleans timetable with the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) method, the standard used by most mosques in the United States: Fajr and Isha at a sun angle of 15 degrees, Asr by the standard shadow rule, with the Hanafi Asr shown through the method selector. Today's Hijri date in New Orleans is 23 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 (03 Nov 2026).

Fajr (5:09 AM today)

True dawn, the first white light spreading sideways along the eastern horizon, opens the Fajr window. In New Orleans today that moment is 5:09 AM. The window shuts at sunrise (6:16 AM); a Fajr prayed after that is qada, a missed prayer made up later. Because dawn in New Orleans swings between 4:41 AM and 6:13 AM over the year, a fixed alarm time never works for long.

Dhuhr (11:44 AM today)

The noon prayer begins once the sun has passed its peak. In New Orleans that works out to 11:44 AM today. Clock time and sun time differ here because New Orleans keeps America/Chicago time from a position away from the zone's central meridian. On Fridays the congregational Jummah replaces Dhuhr.

Asr (2:50 PM today)

Asr begins when the afternoon shadow of an object equals its height, on top of the shadow it cast at noon. In New Orleans today that is 2:50 PM by the standard (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) rule. The Hanafi school waits for double the height, around 45 to 65 minutes later; the method selector above shows that time. Pray it before the sun weakens and yellows near the horizon.

Maghrib (5:12 PM today)

Maghrib begins at sunset, the instant the sun's disc slips fully below the horizon: today that is 5:12 PM in New Orleans. On a fasting day this moment is iftar, and the Sunnah is to break the fast right away, with dates or water, and then pray Maghrib.

Isha (6:19 PM today) and the Last Third of the Night

Isha begins when the last red glow leaves the western sky: 6:19 PM tonight in New Orleans. Halfway between Maghrib and the next Fajr falls Islamic midnight, and the last third of the night after it is set aside for Tahajjud, the voluntary night prayer. Tonight's last third for New Orleans is on our Tahajjud calculator.

Friday Jummah and Mosques in New Orleans, Louisiana

Jummah, the Friday congregational prayer, replaces Dhuhr every week and is the largest regular gathering of Muslims in New Orleans. 2 mosques and Islamic centers in New Orleans are listed below with their addresses, including Abu Bakr Al Siddique Mosque. Each mosque sets its own khutbah time inside the Dhuhr window (Dhuhr today is 11:44 AM), so check the mosque's own notice board or website before you go, and arrive early: Friday parking fills fast.

Alongside Jummah, these mosques hold the five daily congregational prayers, weekend Quran classes for children, and taraweeh in Ramadan. Know a New Orleans mosque that is not listed? Send us its details and we will add it with its address and Jummah time.

Finding the Qibla Direction in New Orleans (49.29° North-East)

Prayer is valid only when faced toward the Kaaba in Mecca, and from New Orleans the shortest path over the Earth's surface, the great-circle route, points 49.29° north-east from true north. The bearing is calculated from New Orleans's coordinates (30.0° N, 90.1° W) to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). Along that bearing, the Kaaba is about 7571 miles (12184 km) from New Orleans in a straight line over the Earth's curved surface. It surprises many people that the direction is north-east rather than south-east: from North America, the shortest line to Mecca crosses the North Atlantic, not the Pacific.

To face the qibla at home or at work in New Orleans, open the Qibla Compass on your phone, calibrate it with a slow figure-eight motion, and keep it away from metal furniture and electrical equipment that pull the needle. In a mosque, the mihrab already marks the direction.

Daylight Saving Time in Louisiana: The Two Jump Days

New Orleans moves its clocks twice a year, and the prayer timetable jumps with them. Daylight saving begins on 08 Mar 2026: Fajr leaps from 5:14 AM to 6:13 AM in one night, a shift of just under an hour, and Maghrib follows, from 6:04 PM to 7:04 PM. On 01 Nov 2026 the clocks fall back, and Fajr returns from 6:07 AM to 5:07 AM. Mosques in New Orleans reset their iqamah boards on the same weekends. This page always follows the America/Chicago time in force, so the times you see are already adjusted.
